A Sunday Stroll through the Hulda Klager Lilac Gardens

On June 5th Jen and I drove up to Woodland Washington to catch the last of the lilacs for the season at the Hulda Klager Lilac Gardens. Hulda moved to Wisconsin in 1865 with her family who came over from Germany and then moved to Woodland in 1877 when she was 13. In 1903 Hulda began hybridizing apples successfully and moved onto lilacs in 1905. By 1910 she created 14 new varieties and she spent decades creating new varieties she would name after neighboring towns etc. She passed away at 96 years old in 1960 and the home was actually slated to be bulldozed for an industrial site when its caretakers could not keep up with it. Thankfully the Woodland Federated Garden Club was able to get it turned into a national state historical site. It really is a beautiful place.

Me and Jen learn new things at a Washington gas station while I pumped my fuel...

An espresso stand at the gas station which we thought was super cute.
